Are you looking for a better-than-average chance at harvesting a Maine Black Bear? Prime Time Hunts specializes in bow hunts, so we know what it takes to get a shot. Our bait sites are started a month prior to the season and are maintained on a regular basis. This is the reason for our better-than-average success and a high quality hunting experience.
All of our hunts take place in Hancock and Washington Counties, located in the Down East region of Maine. Our success rate runs 60-70% with nearly 90% sightings. Some hunters have seen several bear in one sitting. We also maintain over 60 bait sites each season. To ensure maximum hunter success, we place all of our hunters on fresh, non-hunted baits and harvest only one bear per-site per-season. This will prevent over-harvesting the area.
You may be tempted to shoot the very first bear you see but I strongly urge that you shoot only adult bears. If you're seeing a small bear or a sow with cubs, I will put you on another bait. We hunt from portable tree stands set up over bait sites. Our stands are sturdy 2x4 ladder stands, 12 feet in height. The platforms are large and comfortable, to allow you to sit still for several hours. Stands are set between 15 and 40 yards from the bait, improving your chances for success. You may also bring your own stand if you wish. All stands are provided with safty belts for your security. I will get you out to your stand and bring you back in the evening. I will skin, quarter and package your bear for transport. All you will need is a couple of large coolers. I can also recommend a local taxidermist who does a fantastic job. Examples of his work can be seen at my camp.
With the Fully Guided Bait hunts, you are getting meals, lodging, transportation to and from the bait sites, and basic care for you're bear (skinning and quartering for the trip home). A typical day at camp begins with a 7:00am breakfast and all the coffee you can drink. After breakfast, you can get in some fishing, sight-seeing, ride the many miles of trails (for those who bring ATV's), or just sit and relax at camp. A light lunch will be served around noon. We generally load up and head off to the bait sites around 2:30pm. For the most part, all hunters will be on stand by 3:30pm and the hunt begins. Pick-up time will begin at the end of legal shooting time, until everybody is out of the woods.
Once everyone is picked up, we will recover all bear taken, and head back to camp for a hot, home-cooked supper. We will hang the bear to cool for the night. Then, we can sit around the camp fire and re-tell the evenings events. Youth Hunts are for hunters ages 10-15 and must be accompanied by an adult who is at least 18 years of age. Any person who accompanies a junior hunter, other than the parent or guardian, must either possess a valid hunting license or have successfully completed a hunter education course.
